A Blog for the Women of Greenwich in WW1

2016 marks the Centenary of a number of pivotal events during World War One.

  • The Introduction of Conscription for single men aged 18 – 41. This was then extended to married men.
  • The Easter Rising in Ireland
  • The Battle of Jutland
  • The Battle of the Somme
  • The introduction of Daylight Saving Hours

The impact of these events on those on the Home Front was huge; thousands more women had to fill the jobs left behind and the impact on daily life was further shaped by the effects of shortages and constraints.

Thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund we are able to tell the stories of the lives and contribution made by women in the Royal Borough.
